Bio
Kate is a maternity, newborn, and family portrait photographer serving the Northern VA and Washington DC area. Her artistic approach is driven by three simple beliefs: Babies are perfect as they are; Every woman is beautiful; Your life is art. Inspired by light and a film aesthetic, she holds sessions in her natural light studio in Fairfax, VA or outdoors on-location. A minimalist at heart, but a pack-rat in reality, Kate shoots digital for client sessions and film for her personal work – so she owns far more camera gear than one person should.
Maternity sessions are forever a favorite of mine, especially when getting to work with a return client like I did here. I’ve had the honor of photographing this family several times now, most recently for their maternity and newborn sessions for their baby boy. Mom chose to borrow select pieces from my studio wardrobe, including these dresses (two of my favorites!). Their session was especially special because their daughter was included in their session too. I photographed their daughter’s newborn session as well, and now getting to watch her become a big sister feels full-circle somehow. Often overlooked, I’ve found that maternity sessions are a special time of transition for families so they have become among my favorite types of sessions. I encourage mothers to have a maternity session for each of their pregnancies to highlight their growing families and preserve this fleeting stage of life.
