Creative burnout has a way of sneaking up on photographers, especially heading into the busiest and most depleting stretch of the year. In this episode of The Motherhood Anthology podcast, Adrianne Shelton of Beatific Visions Photography and The Kindred Path, and Sara Bywaters-Baldwin of Willow Canvas talk about what it takes to truly reset.

Adrianne and Sara are longtime friends who co-host The Alight Retreat, a multi-day gathering built for photographers who need space to remember why they picked up a camera in the first place. Their conversation covers the difference between a workshop and a retreat, and the simple art exercises that help photographers reconnect with their creative voice.

Why Rest Isn’t a Luxury for Photographers

Adrianne and Sara were intentional from the beginning about calling this a retreat rather than a workshop. A workshop usually promises a specific skill or a portfolio building goal. A retreat is different. It gives photographers permission to focus on themselves without an end result attached, which can feel unfamiliar for business owners used to filling every hour with something productive.

That distinction matters because so much of the emotional weight of running a photography business goes unseen. Clients see a beautiful gallery and assume the photographer simply showed up and clicked a button. What they don’t see is the pressure to feel creative and inspired on command, even on days when a photographer is running on empty. Sara, who spent years working as an art therapist before founding Willow Canvas, brings simple, low pressure art exercises into the retreat (things as basic as working with Play-Doh) to help photographers slow down enough to notice what they’re really carrying.

Those small moments of reflection often surface more than anyone expects. As Sara explained, “I have seen so many case studies that just prove the science that your body will speak to you, and if you want to listen to it and you’re open, the real strength is the vulnerability you offer yourself.” Even something as simple as shaping clay, she said, can bring a feeling to the surface that a busy season had buried.

A Friendship Built Around Creativity and Connection

Long before Willow Canvas backdrops became a familiar sight in photographers’ galleries, Adrianne and Sara were friends first. They met through a church community in Culpeper, Virginia, where Sara eventually invited Adrianne to help coordinate a ministry supporting teen mothers. It was there, photographing those young mothers and their babies, that Adrianne first picked up a camera with intention, and a business was born out of a much more personal calling.

Adrianne later launched The Kindred Path, a digital publication that gave family photographers a place to showcase their work. What started as a passion project during the early days of the pandemic grew into in person workshops, a print magazine, and eventually the retreat she now co-hosts with Sara.

Somewhere in the middle of all that growth, Sara found her own creative outlet too. After years as an art therapist, she started painting backdrops for Adrianne and other photographers to use in their sessions, and Willow Canvas was born. As Adrianne put it, “everybody needs to hear that they have this artist inside of them and it is okay to be who you are and to not be anybody else.”

Community Makes Avoiding Creative Burnout Easier

Adrianne and Sara’s friendship, and the retreat that grew out of it, points to something bigger than any single photography business. Photographers do their best work when they have a community around them that understands the particular pressures of the job. A private community, live coaching, and mentors who have walked the exact same road make it easier to recognize burnout before it becomes a full stop, and easier to remember that creativity is allowed to ebb and flow.

As Sara reflected during the conversation, being open to support (whether it’s a counselor, a mentor, or a weekend away with other photographers) is its own form of strength. It’s a reminder that rest and reflection are just as much a part of running a sustainable photography business as any pricing strategy or marketing plan.
