Repeat clients change the whole shape of a photography business. Instead of chasing a new inquiry every month, you get a calendar that starts to fill itself with families you already know and love. Repeat photography clients are what turn a business from something you’re constantly hustling to fill into something you can actually plan around.
In this best-of episode, we pulled four conversations from the archive that together map out how photographers build predictable, relationship-driven income. You’ll hear a session plan that replaced wedding income, a membership-style offering for past clients, a philosophy on noticing and remembering the people in your community, and a daily habit that costs nothing but a text message.

A Plan Worth Saying Yes To
Hayley Hudgins, a mom of four in North Carolina, built a baby plan that now anchors her business. When an inquiry comes in for a maternity session, she doesn’t send pricing right away. She schedules a phone call first, so she has the chance to explain the value of the plan before a number ever enters the conversation. Her pitch is simple: the bump is the least important part of pregnancy to document, because the connection a family has right now, and the newborn who’s about to arrive, matter more. Families get three full sessions over thirteen months, access to a growing client wardrobe, and studio time that saves parents from having to tidy their whole house before a session.
TMA mentor Adrianne Shelton built something similar for a different problem: past clients who loved working with her but priced out of her main offerings. Her mini membership gives clients a fee structure (paid up front or in installments) in exchange for seasonal mini sessions throughout the year. She plans the themes months ahead (studio lifestyle in January, backdrop portraits in February, outdoor spring sessions in March) and lets clients book their own twenty-minute windows. If nobody signs up for a given date, she gets her Saturday back. It’s a system that protects her time as much as it serves her clients.
Connection Is the Real Marketing Strategy
Not every strategy in this episode involves a pricing structure. Sara Bywaters-Baldwin from Willow Canvas spent her segment on something simpler: noticing. Remembering a client’s name, their family, the losses they’ve carried, the community they belong to. Small, human details that have nothing to do with selling and everything to do with being remembered. As she put it, what photographers create is a gift, and it will be remembered.
Annemarie Hamant, seventeen years into her business and up 44% this year, credits a habit just as simple. She texts past clients for no reason other than she was thinking of them: a sneak peek from an edit, something funny their kid did on camera, a message sent from her car after passing a former client’s street. She isn’t trying to sell anything when she reaches out. It’s just how she relates to people, and it’s the kind of thing that compounds over years, not weeks.

Why This Adds Up to Repeat Clients
None of these four approaches look alike on the surface. One is a structured session plan, one is a membership model, one is a mindset, and one is a habit. But they share the same underlying belief: a photography business built on repeat clients isn’t built by accident. It comes from decisions made early, in a pricing call, in a seasonal calendar, in a text sent for no reason at all.
These are the kinds of conversations that used to only happen in hotel lobbies after a conference, photographers finally being honest about what was and wasn’t working. That’s the space TMA tries to hold every day, with mentors and a community of photographers talking through exactly this kind of question.
