With two decades of newborn photography experience, Danielle Hobbs knows exactly what makes a session work, and that’s exactly what she brings to this episode of The Motherhood Anthology podcast. Known across the TMA community for her newborn work and her signature warmth with clients, Danielle sat down with host Kim Box to talk through the small details that make the biggest difference in a newborn session, from lighting to posing to the reality of working with a toddler sibling in the room.
Newborn Posing and Lighting Fundamentals That Make the Difference
Danielle’s approach to newborn photography starts long before the camera comes out. She talked about her beanbag setup, and how the biggest mistake she sees from other photographers isn’t a lack of skill, it’s simply not layering enough blankets to get a smooth, even surface for the baby to rest on. It sounds small, but it saves an enormous amount of editing time later.
The lighting lesson was even more striking. After twenty years of shooting newborns, Danielle said the single biggest shift in her work came from understanding one rule. “The number one thing is don’t uplight your baby.” She compared it to telling a scary story around a campfire, where holding a flashlight under your chin creates harsh, unflattering shadows. The same thing happens when light comes up from below a baby’s face instead of falling naturally across it. Once she understood that, her images changed, and it’s a tip she still teaches to every workshop student.
She also touched on how she reads light for black and white images specifically, noting that the right shadow placement is what makes an image feel like it belongs in black and white in the first place, rather than converting it after the fact.
Toddlers, Fussy Babies, and Making It Work
Anyone who photographs families knows that toddler and newborn sessions bring their own kind of chaos, and Danielle didn’t sugarcoat it. Toddlers, she explained, are often the hardest part of any session simply because they’re too big to pose and too young to direct. Her solution is to let the toddler warm up naturally while she photographs the baby alone first, giving the older sibling time to get curious and comfortable before asking anything of them. “You kind of have to just do what they want to do,” she said, and that philosophy of following the child’s lead rather than forcing a shot runs through her entire approach.
For fussy babies, she leaned on the classic five S’s, shushing, swaddling, swaying, sucking, and side lying, and shared that some babies settle far better on their side or stomach than flat on their back, especially if reflux is a factor. She also encouraged parents not to worry about feeding a little earlier than usual on session day, noting that a full, sleepy baby is almost always easier to work with.
The conversation also touched on birth photography, which Danielle still shoots occasionally for repeat clients, though rarely anymore given how unpredictable it can be. Her take on it was simple and memorable: “It’s a wedding on call where you really don’t know what’s going to happen there for three hours. You could be there for 30 hours and you just don’t know.”
Pricing With Confidence and the Power of Community
Beyond the technical side, Danielle spoke candidly about pricing and boundaries, two topics that come up constantly inside the TMA community. She’s raised her prices steadily over the years and encouraged photographers to stop comparing themselves to what others charge in different markets. “It’s really unreasonable to think that we’re still going to charge the same amount we did four years ago, right?” she said, pointing out that every cost of running a business, from gas to wardrobe to studio space, keeps climbing too.
She also talked about the boundaries that let her run a sustainable, busy business without burning out, something she credits with keeping her in the industry for eighteen years and counting. As she put it, “I think we as business owners, we have to have boundaries because at least for me, it’s just me. So everything is on me in my business to make it right, to get it done.”
