If you’ve ever wondered whether there’s a middle ground between a full photography session and no session at all, photographer Adrianne Shelton has an answer: the mini session membership. On this episode of The Motherhood Anthology Podcast, Adrianne joins host Kim Box to talk through how she built a year-long mini membership offer, one designed to keep her calendar full, her pricing clear, and her clients connected to her work even when a full session isn’t in the budget.
It’s a smart look at how a working photographer tests a new idea, prices it thoughtfully, and lets real client response guide what comes next.

What a Mini Session Membership Actually Looks Like
Adrianne already offered a traditional membership, essentially a “baby’s first year” plan where clients prepay a flat fee that covers a handful of sessions across maternity, newborn, and the first birthday. The mini session membership is something different. It’s built for clients who want to keep documenting their family throughout the year, or who loved working with Adrianne in the past but were priced out after she raised her rates significantly.
Instead of a full, hands-on session experience, mini members choose from one themed offering each month, whether that’s a studio lifestyle session in January, backdrop portraits in February, or an outdoor spring session in March. Clients pay a flat fee upfront or opt into a monthly payment plan, then sign up for whichever three dates fit their family best.
The structure is intentionally simple. Adrianne offers three tiers, gold, premium, and basic, each with a different session length and image count, so pricing never becomes a guessing game. She built in clear upgrade options too, so if a client falls in love with more images than their tier included, there’s an easy, transparent way to add them. As Adrianne put it, “I want it to be fair. I want it to be they’re not getting as much as they would with a full session, but they know what they’re getting into and what they can expect.”
Early Results and What She’s Learned
So far, the response has been strong, particularly among past clients who scaled back after Adrianne’s pricing increase but still wanted to work with her. A few former full-membership clients have already signed on to continue documenting their families, and Adrianne has noticed something else interesting: some of her highest-paying, full-experience clients are also booking mini sessions on top of their regular sessions, simply because they love having more images of their kids throughout the year.
She’s also thinking ahead to the small logistics that come with something new, like what happens if a toddler needs more warm-up time than a five or ten minute session allows. Adrianne is already fielding those questions from clients and adjusting as she goes, which is exactly the kind of real-time problem solving that comes with trying something new in your business. As she and Kim discussed, you don’t figure out what needs to change until you actually put the offer out into the world and start booking.

Why Trying New Things Matters
What stands out most in this conversation isn’t just the offer itself, it’s Adrianne’s willingness to test something new, price it with intention, and adjust along the way instead of waiting for a perfect plan. As she shared, “I think sometimes we get so stuck in thinking about let’s figure out all the things that could be wrong with this idea that you never do anything new or you never try anything.” That mindset, staying curious and willing to experiment, is something we hear echoed across so many photographer journeys inside the TMA community. Real growth rarely comes from having every detail figured out in advance. It comes from launching, listening to client response, and refining from there.
