Attracting luxury photography clients isn’t about raising your prices and hoping the right people notice. It’s about your language, your standards, your client experience, and the quality of your work all pointing in the same direction.

This is one of our summer best-of episodes, which means instead of a single conversation, you’re getting five. A high end client isn’t defined by a zip code or an income bracket. They’re simply someone who values photography and is willing to invest in you and your art, and they already exists in your market. This episode pulls together the sharpest thinking from Ashlyn Carter, Sean Low, Casia Fletcher, Brittany Barb, and Elizabeth Messina on exactly how to find them.

How to Attract Luxury Photography Clients | EP 180

What Actually Sets You Apart

Ashlyn Carter, founder of Ashlyn Writes and one of the most respected voices on copywriting for creatives, opens with what she calls finding your “loneliness factor.” Every photographer in a market is capturing special moments and telling stories with a camera, so those phrases stop meaning anything to a client trying to choose between you and someone else. Ashlyn’s point is that your differentiation has to come from somewhere more specific: your story, your process, your aesthetic, your point of view. She describes it as a kaleidoscope, all of those pieces layered together into something that’s uniquely yours.

Sean Low, a business consultant for creative entrepreneurs, takes that idea a step further. When a prospective client asks why they should pay you more than the photographer down the street offering a $500 session, Sean’s advice is to stop trying to win that comparison. Instead, separate yourself from it entirely. He compares it to a fast food fry cook and a steakhouse chef both technically flipping a burger. Different business, different value, different client. Once you believe that, you stop justifying your prices and start owning your position.

Turning the Teaching Into Real Sales

Casia Fletcher of Fletcher & Co has been in business for 19 years, and her approach to attracting the right clients starts with a hard truth: your friends and family are usually not your ideal clients. Some of them will never see the value in what you do, and that’s fine. The people worth chasing are the ones who are obsessed with your work and become your biggest cheerleaders and referral sources. Her strategy for finding them is refreshingly unglamorous. Show up in your community, again and again, at the school events, the local workshops, the small gatherings most photographers skip because they’re too busy waiting at home for inquiries to arrive.

Brittany Barb, based in North Idaho, shares the mindset ritual that took her from $500 all-inclusive sessions to her first $4,000 sale. Before every ordering appointment, she sits down and writes out the outcome she wants, picturing the client investing at that level before the call even starts. It’s not about upselling. It’s about walking in as the expert who already knows what the client needs, even before they do. That shift in confidence, more than any script, is what changed her sales.

The Foundation Underneath It All

Elizabeth Messina closes the episode with the piece that ties everything else together. Marketing, SEO, positioning, and pricing all matter, but none of it holds up if the work itself isn’t strong. She compares it to building a second story on a house. The first story has to be solid, or everything you build on top of it eventually collapses. For her, the real goal isn’t just getting your name out there. It’s creating a sustainable business with longevity, and that starts with a body of work you’re genuinely proud of.

That’s also why conversations like this matter so much. The kind of insight shared across these five clips used to only happen in hotel lobbies after conferences, photographers finally saying out loud what they were charging and what was actually working. Having a space where those conversations happen regularly, with mentors who’ve built the businesses you’re working toward, changes how fast you grow and how much you have to figure out alone.
