Most photographers don’t join a photography business community because things are going well. They join because something feels off, the schedule is full but the bank account doesn’t reflect it, or the pride of being “busy” has quietly turned into burnout. That was Ali Payne’s story before she ever became TMA’s Community Manager, and it’s the story she’s sharing in this episode of The Motherhood Anthology Podcast.

Before joining the TMA team, Ali was running a busy photography business, shooting weddings, babies, families, and seniors, and feeling proud of how full her calendar was. What she didn’t see at the time was that being busy wasn’t the same as being profitable, and she was working for far less than her desired salary while missing family time along the way.

A New Perspective on Pricing and Artistry

When Ali came on board to work on TMA’s social media and marketing, she stepped into the membership without much context for what she was about to find. One moment stands out clearly. Watching mentor Shannon Griffin talk about her first nearly $40,000 sale, and hearing the confidence behind it, shifted something in how Ali thought about her own work. It wasn’t about being “just a photographer.” It was about being paid for artistry, not simply digital files.

That shift didn’t stay theoretical for long. Within a month of being immersed in the membership content, Ali changed her pricing, updated her marketing strategy, and found a fresh perspective on running her business, one that has continued to grow with every month inside TMA since.

From Burnout to a Business She Actually Understood

Ali describes the education inside TMA as a fast track to learning how to run a photography business the right way, the kind of resource that leaves you wondering why you didn’t find it sooner. That’s not marketing language, it’s the honest reaction of someone who spent years figuring things out the hard way before finding a place that laid it out clearly.

What made the difference wasn’t just the strategy, it was seeing that the education fit every stage of business, from someone just starting out to someone with years of experience already behind them. Pricing, marketing, mindset, all of it became less overwhelming once there was a clear place to learn it.

Why Community Is the Other Half of Growth

For Ali, the education was only part of the story. The community inside TMA gave her a place where photographers who inspired her online were suddenly peers asking the same questions and facing the same client situations she was. It’s a rare kind of camaraderie, one where you can bring an honest question about a difficult client email and know someone else has lived through the exact same thing.

That dynamic shapes how TMA responds to what members actually need. When a wave of members recently asked about raising prices, and then worried about not getting bookings afterward, mentor Kristin Sweeting stepped in with education on pricing strategy along with mindset training to help members work through the guilt that so often comes with charging what their work is worth. It’s a clear example of a photography business community listening closely and responding directly.

Listen and Learn More

Ali’s story is a reminder that the version of your business you’re currently running isn’t the only version available to you. Whether you’re feeling the early signs of burnout or you’re simply looking for a place to keep growing alongside other photographers who understand the work, this episode is worth a listen.
