When Shannon Griffin left wedding photography behind, she knew she couldn’t just swap one calendar for another. She had to rebuild her entire business around a slower, more custom process, one built on client trust, real conversation, and in-person sales. On this episode of The Motherhood Anthology Podcast, host Ali Payne sits down with Shannon to talk about how she turned that shift into a full service, wall art focused business, and why she believes the discovery call is where the real work begins.
Shannon’s approach is patient, personal, and built on getting to know her clients long before she ever picks up a camera. That process is exactly what makes her business work, and it’s a masterclass in how in-person sales can transform the way photographers build trust and value.

Building Client Trust Before the Camera Comes Out
Shannon’s process starts well before a session is ever booked. A potential client receives her process page, fills out a questionnaire, and then moves into a discovery call, all before pricing is discussed in detail. That structure is about making sure every client fully understands what they’re signing up for. Shannon is upfront that most inquiries fall away once they see her commission fee, and she’s made peace with that. She would rather a client opt out early than book her and regret it later.
That honesty extends into the planning call, where Shannon pulls together a Pinterest board with wardrobe and location inspiration based on what she’s learned about each client’s home and style. By the time the session happens, her clients have already been vulnerable with her, and she with them. That’s what allows her to walk into an ordering session and say, with confidence, “this is what I think you need,” rather than asking clients to guess. She wants there to be a little discomfort in the process, not because she enjoys it, but because she believes that’s where the most honest, meaningful photographs come from.
From Wedding Photographer to Wall Art Business
Shannon didn’t always sell this way. Before she stepped away from weddings in 2020, she was running an all inclusive model, one where clients received every digital file and rarely did anything with them. She realized that leaving someone with a folder of images and no guidance felt, to her, like leaving them with an undeveloped negative. So she rebuilt her offer around fully custom wall galleries, matted print boxes, and albums, with commission fees that reflect real design and installation work rather than a flat collection price.
The results speak for themselves. Shannon has walked clients through five figure wall galleries, designed custom art for a client mid-divorce who had never hung a single family photo in her new home, and even talked a bride’s wedding planner into referring her for engagement and portrait work after Shannon stepped away from weddings entirely. She’s candid that pricing conversations used to make her nervous, and that confidence came from repetition, practice, and a willingness to be firm about her boundaries. As she put it during the episode, she’d rather lose a client over price than deliver an experience that leaves either of them unhappy.

Why Community Makes the Difference
Shannon credits much of her growth to the mentors and members inside The Motherhood Anthology. She’s open about the fact that pricing conversations, boundary setting, and in-person sales don’t come naturally to most photographers. Learning from other business owners, seeing how different mentors approach the same challenges, and having a place to ask questions in real time made a measurable difference in her own confidence. She pointed out that every mentor inside TMA runs their business a little differently, and that variety is part of the value. There’s no single right way to build a profitable photography business, only the way that fits your own strengths and your own clients.
Listen and Learn More
Shannon’s story is a reminder that a slower, more intentional sales process doesn’t just build bigger sales. It builds clients who trust you enough to invest in art that lives on their walls for decades. If you’ve been wondering how to move away from all inclusive pricing or build more confidence around your own in-person sales conversations, this episode is worth a listen.
