Photographer Spotlight: Erin Davison Boring

Location: Akron, Ohio

What’s in your camera bag & what’s your favorite lens?

Canon 5D Mark IV, Canon 100mm 2.8L Macro, Canon 85mm 1.2L, Sigma Art 50mm 1.4, Canon 35mm 1.4L, Canon 6D. My favorite lens is the Canon 85mm 1.2! I use it exclusively for outdoor sessions and have been using it a lot in studio lately as well!

Who inspires you?

This is tough! There are too many to list. I’m honestly inspired by anyone who is making their business work for their family, both with balancing work and family time as well as being a financial provider.

What makes your brand unique?

Locally, there are almost no photographers who offer a full service experience for clients with a studio, full family wardrobe, or the same caliber of heirloom artwork products that I provide for my clients. I also like to do a mix of more natural posing to get that “lifestyle” feel within a studio setting, but I also have posed work of newborns so that my clients can have the best of both worlds!

What’s your favorite aspect of your business?

I LOVE custom framing! I was beyond intimidated when I decided to start offering it, and even more intimidated when I decided to do it all in-house rather than working with a local frame shop. But now being able to see my images go from file on the computer, to a print, to a finished piece of artwork and then seeing it on my clients’ walls is definitely one of my favorite things.

What business advice would you give to someone overwhelmed with starting out?

My advice would be to not wing it when you’re just starting out. Figure out what your expenses are – or what they will be once you’ve created the business you ultimately want; maybe that includes a commercial studio, a wardrobe, etc – and then price yourself to be sustainable from the get go. You should never, ever, ever be taking home less than minimum wage in profit while running your business! Be open-minded to critiques of your work and business model, so that you can grow!

What’s your Starbucks drink?

Okay, don’t hate me! I’m not really a Starbucks person, and I don’t drink anything coffee or coffee flavored, or tea haha. I do love their apple cider in the fall & winter, and their iced lemon cake!
