Bio:
Kara is a newborn and motherhood photographer based in Richmond, VA, specializing in thoughtfully crafted portraits that express the heart of motherhood. While she serves families in all seasons of their lives, documenting the first year of a baby’s life is where she thrives. From glowing mamas-to-be, through first birthdays, babies are her happy place. Often dubbed a “baby whisperer” by her clients, she is known to have one of the best swaddles around! When she’s not behind the camera, she can be found whipping up Half Baked Harvest’s latest recipe while day-dreaming of her next Disney trip with husband, Steven, and their two young daughters, Cora Jane and Evelyn.
About the Session:
One of the highest compliments as a creative, specifically a motherhood photographer, is having someone who seeks you out; Someone who sees the heart and vision you have for documenting motherhood so clearly that she implicitly trusts you on the day of her own session. Mama, Ali, was exactly this way! We had been in touch via Instagram before she was expecting her second son and it was always so humbling and uplifting to hear how excited she was to work with me in the not too distant future.
Fast forward a year or so and we arrive at her newborn session. Her and her husband, Chris, are just the kindest. They are laid back and funny. Guys. They met on an airplane! I don't know about you, but they clearly need a movie made about their lives! They are building their new home, so the session took place at their guest home, which they have been living in during the build. The light was gorgeous inside, but I took one look at those gas lamps, that smilax, the gorgeous slate and I was smitten.
I had been wanting to document an intimate baby's first bath for quite some time, but the right opportunity had not presented itself. I took one glance in their bathroom and couldn't help but ask if she would be willing. She said that she trusted the vision and away we went, bubbles and all! Baby Rhys was so content in the warmth of his first soak, right next to his mama. My highest goal is to help create moments that will be remembered for years and years to come. There is something so creatively freeing for photographers, really any artist, when we are able to have creative freedom. Having that trust and connection with the families we serve is invaluable. I'm so grateful.
